Benjamin Bugsy Siegel Initialed Movado Travel Clock

Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel Personally Owned Gold Movado Travel Clock

Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel was a notorious Jewish American gangster and is often credited as one of the key figures in the development of Las Vegas as a gambling hub. Known for his charismatic and volatile personality, Siegel had a taste for luxury, often seen in expensive cashmere tailored suits and flashy jewelry, which added to his image as both a ruthless criminal and the glamorous Hollywood sportsman type figure he was trying to convey. Siegel’s monogrammed travel clock is a perfect example oh his style and elegance. The small gold-tone, scale-like textured pattern, Movado travel clock is shaped like a matchbook but opens in the center when it is pulled apart from both ends. Once opened the Swiss-made travel clock reveals the clock and the initials “BS” etched on a stand that can be pulled out allowing the clock to stand on a flat surface. This is something that Ben would have likely used while traveling by plane or train, possibly during his frequent trips from Los Angeles to Las Vegas.

Provenance

The gold Movado travel clock traces back directly to the Siegel family estate. Following Siegel’s 1947 murder, Ben’s ex-wife, Esta, gained possession of the clock, which she kept until her death in 1981. The watch was then passed on to Millicent (Siegel) Rosen, the eldest daughter of Ben and Esta. In 2011 Millicent entered into a deal with the Las Vegas Mob Experience and eventually sold them several possessions that belonged to her father including this travel clock.  Those items remained in the collection of the Las Vegas Mob Experience until they were auctioned off by Julien’s Auction House in August 2022, where it then became part of the Bash Collection.
